Fridays Never Looked So Good!
March 23, 2010
JC Fridays is a free arts and cultural movement that occurs quarterly in Jersey City, NJ. You can expect to culture-cram the first Friday of March, June, September, and right before Christmas in December. 2010’s participants did not disappoint and there were a few who got in on the action although they never officially signed up!
Angelica F., Erika N., Sylvia B., & Karina F. at Ed’s Salvage Co.
We began our journey in up & coming McGinley Square at the Uptown Salvage Chic event, where indie fashion designer KARINA, debuted her established line to a ready-to-wear crowd. Held at Ed’s Salvage Co., (a neighborhood vintage & consignment shop) and hosted by Uptown Crew, (a burgeoning group that focuses on the lesser well-known areas of JC) this was a palatable way to start our trek. On hand were exquisite clothes and accessories, plenty of buzz, tasty snacks, Pretty Things Beer, and funky music to vibe too. We had a grand time watching folks from the area and beyond check out the trendy threads and salvaged wares.
Next, we headed over to Imago Basilico. Owned by Steve C., this salon is über high-end and although it was after 10pm, the party was still in full swing. Steve said, “I never miss participating in a JCF event and I have no problem staying open until the last person calls it a night.” Imago’s featured artist, Mark Morchel, a Hudson County lawyer and set designer for ‘The Attic Ensemble’, showed more than 15 paintings on wood, all made of reclaimed materials. This one in particular was eye-catching but not for sale.

To our suprise, DaVinci’s Italian Deli infiltrated the action . Although they were not on the tour list, delicious, COMPLIMENTARY food was served from their Bergen Ave eatery throughout the day. Breads, chicken parmesan, and a chicken salad made with mayo, walnut, celery, and red grapes. Everything was out of this world and the DaVinci team doled out the good eats to anyone who dropped in.

It was getting late so we headed for downtown. We set out to visit ‘Railroad’, a super cool and super tight, railroad apartment/gallery space that made us feel like we had just gotten off the F train at the L.E.S station stop. The unit, on the fourth floor of a pre-war walk up, reeked of hip art and really cool music spun by Jan Thompkins. In the very back room of the flat, Lora Morgenstern showed vintage hand-made flowers reminiscent of the Victorian Era. ”Although mine are Victorian inspired, whimsy is infused,” Said Lora. “They are great for weddings, as a tree topper, or boutonnière. And, they are priced right so you can make someone really feel loved.” Lora has created these objects of wish for more than ten years and shows no signs of slowing.

Our last stop was Boca Grande where Grassroots Community-Space set it off like the JC Fridays closing ceremonies. The music was THUMPing and the wood floor jam-packed with people looking to boogie into the night. The small $5 entry fee benefits Haiti and that’s a cause most would get down to.

Damon Dash Does Downtown
February 25, 2010
As expected, the Damon Dash Gallery opening hosted by Gabriel Fortoul, ensued a huge crowd and police barricades were enlisted to help control the scene outside. Inside, fascinatingly huge and at times ominous, works of art adorned the walls of the three-story Tribeca space. As hundreds (literally) buzzed about the artist’s compound at 172 Duane St. it was obvious that the DD clan is focused on putting their own stamp on art in america. We’re just glad we finally got in.
Libertad was emblazoned across the top of one of Isaac Fortoul’s paintings in the double height main space of the new Damon Dash Gallery. The word libertad (liberty in English) is synonymous among people demanding a clean break from any oppressive force and emancipation is precisely what this showcase perpetuated. For Damon Dash, a former Hip Hop mogul, the artist’s colony is a brilliant way to reinvent himself after stepping away from the music industry. His creativity, and that of the artists, shone through in this highly anticipated downtown group exhibition.
Damon Dash’s new concept is assuredly influencing the minds of many who may have never given art a second thought. His initiative is introducing/reintroducing “the arts” to a crowd that might otherwise find it dull or unneccessary. Perhaps he and the featured artists Isaac Fortoul, Bobby Castaneda, Heather Gargon, Nyssa Frank, and Ellen Frank realize there is an awakening afoot among urban youths nationwide and they intend to be at the forefront. Could this be Hip Hop’s refining moment?

Damon Dash Tonight!
February 20, 2010
We are headed to the Damon Dash Gallery opening in Tribeca, NYC. Will jersey city review get in? Let’s see!

When we heard Brooklyn’s popular Sugarland was having a ’Street Smarts’ exhibition to help ’Doctor’s Without Borders’ Haiti Relief Effort, we felt it our absolute duty to show up. Jarrod Serafine, the event host and coordinator, put together a multi-media show that featured budding and established area artists. The line-up was incredibly diverse and displayed a broad range of visual and performing artists. The turnout was high and the show a success on all fronts, with it’s cool mix of art, music, entertainment and overall groovy time. What’s more, the shin dig raised over $1000 for DWB. How sweet is that?
