The Fight is Over!

October 19, 2010

She took her last breath at 1:20am on October 18, 2010.

Perla R. Espinal fought hard for over a year and finally decided that her life would be better served on the other side.  With family and a few friends close by, this remarkable lady’s suffering came to an end and the battle with cancer that wreaked havoc on her body, is finally over.

Saddened loved-ones admitted she was ready to go. In the few weeks leading up to her death, Perla made a point of letting those around her know. “I am going to be walking on streets of gold”, some recall her saying. Surely one of those streets is named after her.

Rest in abundant peace Perla R. Espinal.

Still Fighting

May 6, 2010

Back in March, we introduced you to Perla R. Espinal who is aggressively fighting a formidable opponent. Her daily bout with cancer is a continuous drain on her emotional and mental strength. Chemo is not helping and the doctors have increased the dosages to the point where it causes her hands and feet to bleed.

JCR - When did you first discover you had cancer?

PRE – August 1, 2009. I found a tiny lump in my right breast but I didn’t think it was serious because I had just had a mammogram in May. The results were negative and since I have an exam every year around the same time, I didn’t give it a second thought. May is concert season for me and it gets extremely stressful. The chaos helps me remember to get myself checked.

On August 10, the bump grew to the size of a kiwi and it was severely painful.  Immediately, I called every hospital I could think of and no one had an opening. The earliest appointment I was able to get was August 26th

After demanding help right away, Englewood Hospital stated they would give me a fine needle aspiration but not a mammogram. I didn’t know what that was but I agreed since I was in such great pain.

On August 12, I arrived at the hospital and they proceeded to stick a needle in my  breast and draw liquid out for testing. Results were back in 15 minutes. I had malignant cancer. I virtually went into shock. The hospital staffers performed a few more tests and by the time they were done, I was told I had eight months to live.

JCR – How has it affected your life?

PRE – I decided to get a second opinion from Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital. They gave me hope but I was already at stage two and had triple negative breast cancer. There are three receptors known to fuel breast cancer and the most successful treatments for cancer target these receptors. I don’t have any of them so I was put on chemotherapy.

Then, the challenge I face is the immunity my cancer has to chemo. The AC treatment & Taxol treatment helped very little so the cancer continued to grow. Can you believe four more tumors developed in the liver and there is activity in my colon? Also, the growth in my boob grew three centimeters. Sometimes my intestines feel like they are on fire because the chemo burns the lining. It’s tough.

Now, I am on a double chemo treatment. One, Ixabepilone, is taken intravenously and the other is a pill called Xeloda which I take twice a day. Symptoms range from fatigue and nausea to swelling and bleeding of the hands and feet.

JCR – What now?

PRE - So far, doctors working with me are not able to pinpoint the cancer’s origin and that’s interfering with treatment. I admit the symptoms are extremely taxing but I try to maintain peace. It’s rare that I even leave the apartment in an effort to protect myself from infection due to a low white blood cell count. My life is lived mostly in the confines of my home. Thank God it’s pretty.

The Battle Rages On

March 4, 2010

Meet Perla R. Espinal. Perla is a graduate of  Princeton University. She currently resides in Union City, NJ and over the years, has taught music in the Union City Public Schools. She is well-respected among her colleagues and has introduced and inspired many young people to get more involved in the arts. Recently, Perla was diagnosed with cancer.

Over the next few weeks/months/years (hopefully a lifetime) jersey city review will document one woman’s courageous fight against a formidable opponent. We hope you are as moved-to-action by her story as we are.
